Irv Johnson is offering 3 exciting in depth new courses on composing music for media. This is Modul III.

Målgruppe: For musicians and composers that want to delve deep into the art of scoring music to picture.

All three classes are thought having independent goals, all use a similar process that is designed to get the student fluent in telling stories with music, and that is achieved achieved in the following three ways:

Composition
All participants will score a piece of music the entrance video, that has a worded brief attached, to be used as the inspiration for the music composition.

This process introduces the composer to compose music for a specific emotional experience (storytelling).

Evaluations
Each video has a music brief attached that will serve as the inspiration for the composition.
Each class will be divided into two groups, composers and evaluators; all will participate in both.

The evaluation process, helps the composer to connect the actual words in the brief, with the emotions in the musical composition . Further, it will reveal what an individual’s music is actually communicating to others, through the feedback of the evaluations of others.

Revisions
Getting a composition “perfect” in tone and story, is a process that is part detaching one’s emotion to a particular composition and part learning to “perfect” a language that underscores an emotion or creative vision.
• Learning how to listen and apply someone else’s suggestions on how to better a composition, is perhaps the most powerful tool in a composers box.

Content:
• Screen and evaluate each composition
• Revise
• Work with an actual brief from an actual promo or commercial
• Lecture and evaluation of both the entrance video and promo/commercial from an industry professional.

GOALS:
• To introduce the principles of scoring
• Give the participant a basic roadmap to work from
• Introduce and apply the concept of a three act play and apply it to music storytelling
• Learn how to develop themes along a time line
• Use the basic principles learned in the first quarter of the course and use it to score three relates scenes from a film
• Lecture and evaluation of both the entrance video and film cues from an industry professional.

Tools needed:
• A DAW (preferably Logic Pro)
• Laptop

For musicians and composers that want to delve deep into the art of scoring music to picture.

Film & television composer, Irv Johnson and The Rytmisk Center are offering three new exciting, in depth courses on the art of scoring to picture, starting this fall (2019) at Rytmisk Center in Vesterbro. All three classes use the same principles on scoring music to media used by professional composers worldwide.

As composers for film and television, we use the language of music to tell the emotional story under a film. The music score gives shape and meaning to picture, provides context, and allows for the necessary space for us to emotionally process what we see. But music is only one part of a larger narrative that, along with the story and characters, helps connect us to a greater story as we process, in real time, everything we see and hear.
Whether it is a promo, commercial, short or feature, every film has a story to tell. If that story uses music, then the music for that story has a distinct purpose. That purpose is manifest in the form of a music brief.
A composer for film and television can translate, from the words in a music brief, a coherent, musical narrative that seamlessly fits into a context. That is essentially what scoring is and what serves as the foundation of these modules.
